There are a few historic buildings in the old town, but you can tell right away that it was created between hills and sea at a time when the city was much smaller and the current dimensions were never considered. Almost village-like, the Victorian-era buildings appear on the 60-90-meter-high “The Hills” plateau above downtown, and modern life has undoubtedly made a wide berth around this area – still known as the “Central”. The roads were too steep for traffic and the city fathers’ policies were too far-sighted for “Downtown Port Elizabeth” to have boomed.
Port Elizabeth is a fabulous starting point to discover the wild side of South Africa. The Addo Elephant National Park is home to more than 600 elephants. After rainy days, the gentle giants prefer to nibble on the fresh grass of the wide areas, otherwise the pachyderms usually walk comfortably through the thicket or bathe in one of the waterholes. While most elephants are in the north of the park, lions are more likely to be found in the south.
When you look at the lighthouse at the end of the shallow beach, you might almost think you are standing on the North Sea coast, with the Cape Recife Nature Reserve in South Africa’s Port Elizabeth. Injured or weakened seabirds and penguins are being rearmed there in the SAMREC. Van Stadens Wild Flower Reserve boasts 500 hectares of authentic flora and fauna. Hiking trails lead through forests, the babbling river as well as fynbos and fragrant flower seas. Other great options for memorable hours in the Eastern Cape include the Maitland Nature Reserve, The Island Nature Reserve, Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area and The Groendal Wilderness Area.
